A charming village that brings together all the styles and tribes in an array of colours, sounds, flavours and fragrances; Itacaré is blessed with a rich variety that is absolutely breathtaking!

According to popular knowledge, Itacaré means "Beautiful Stone" or "Round Stone" in Tupi-Guarani, an Indian dialect. But recent researches at the University of Bahia demonstrated that the name Itacaré actually means "River of Different Noise;" probably a reference to the main river in the region, Rio de Contas (the Beading River).

Itacaré makes up part of the Cocoa Coast of Bahia state, in Northeast Brazil. The region occupies an area of 732km² and is located in the tropical zone, with medium temperatures around 27ºC (80ºF). Itacaré was first "discovered" as a destination in the 70's by surfers. The region is a shelf spanning just eight miles on the Bahian coast, ensuring that ocean waves hit it with consistency and vigour. That's why Itacaré is one of the best places to surf in Brazil and South America. From then on, the region has become well-known as a paradise of perfect waves. Itacaré is also known as the natural home of the surfing fraternity, with surfers coming from all over the world. In 2007, a stage of WQS - World Qualifying Series (surf championship) was held at Tiririca Beach. Other great surfing beaches are: Engenhoca, Havaizinho, Prainha and Jeribucaçu.

The Itacare region was originally occupied by Indians who lived off hunting, fishing and cultivation. The Portuguese 'discovered' Itacare and settled here in 1532, turning the village into a city in 1732. The Portuguese brought together the Jesuits that left a Catholic legacy, and the beautiful São Miguel Church; built in 1718 that bears testimony to their influence.

Cocoa cultivation was once the basis of Itacare's economy and, over the decades, the lords of cocoa controlled the wealth of the region. These ‘colonels' or landowners had a lavish lifestyle and lived in big mansions. The remnants of this colonial grandeur can still be seen in Itacare.

The apogee of Cocoa Coast, with its joyful people and wonderful landscapes are also present in Jorge Amado's novels. Born in Ilheus (the scenery for most of his works), around 70 km from Itacare, Jorge Amado is one of the most well-known Brazilian writers. His books have been translated in 55 countries and there is no doubt he has helped spread the word about the beautiful features and culture of this wonderful land.

In the 80's Itacare faced the impoverishment and decline of the cocoa economy after an attack of the Witch's Broom - a pest that damages cocoa plantations. By that time, the region had started to catch a glimpse of tourism as a new way to develop its economy. Until 1998, Itacare was still a small town and only visited by regional people and the first surfers who discovered its perfect waves. At the end of the 90's an asphalted road was made and the city developed quickly.

Today you can find delicious restaurants in Itacare that specialise in traditional cuisine based on fish and seafood. You will also find a bustling nightlife, with entertainment and good music for every taste. The city pulsates to the sounds of reggae and forró music, as locals and tourists alike enjoy the youthful buzz of the town.
