Eco-adventure

Lush tropical vegetation decorates the Itacaréan landscape. Gurgling amidst the intertwining Atlantic rainforest flora are sparkling waterfalls and brisk rivers. Beaches, forests and freshwater streams can only coexist so beautifully in one of the prettiest places in Brazil, Itacaré.

Southern Bahia is the most noted amongst all the regions; here, the rivers Jequitinhonha and Contas flow, supporting the most vital part of the Atlantic rainforest. In the Northeast of Brazil, these forests are full of evergreen super-sized trees and epiphytes. Supporting rare species like the yellow-breasted twig monkey and ring-necked sloth, these forests are a treasure trove of delight.

No wonder the Atlantic rainforest is regarded as richly abundant by the worldwide scientific fraternity. Its ecosystems and abundance of rare plants and near extinct animals are notable and receive a lot of international focus. In fact, UNESCO categorised the Atlantic rainforest as a Biosphere Reserve in 1991, making it one of the three major global conservation issues.

Mountain Biking

Mountain Biking is another favourite pastime in the region of Taboquinhas and Serra Grande. Sharing the course with zip lining enthusiasts, mountain bikers move on crossings suspended on cables connecting two extreme points. Definitely not for the faint-hearted, it is a mountaineering sport that sets hearts pounding and spirits soaring.

Nature and adrenaline

Before other kinds of tourism took off in Itacaré, surfing was the biggest attraction. With a motorable road linking Ilhéus and Itacaré, tourists found it easy to access this region. What awaited them was a horde of pulsating adventure sports - rafting, canyoning, mountain biking, biking, kayaking, paragliding, and hiking. A wide range of specialist coaches are available today to make every adventure thrilling and enjoyable. Arvorism lovers can enjoy walking on hanging trails suspended between tall Atlantic rainforest trees that add a dash of real thrill on holiday. Some simpler trails are specially created for beginners, like the Itacaré and Serra Grande ecological trails, so that everyone can enjoy nature's bounty here.

Eco tourism and adventure tourism both provide invaluable support to the economy of Itacaré. Eco tourism helps in preserving Itacaré's picturesque topography. It conserves nature, generates income and improves the overall quality of life.
