Celebration to the Patron of the city – St. Michael

29/09/2010

Place of event: Itacaré

September 29th  is the day to honor St. Michael, the patron saint of Itacare. The religious event will count on parties on the street, on the main aquare and musical performances. The faithful begin the celebrations with the "Alvorada Festiva" and fires, followed by a mass and a procession through the streets of Itacaré, where the image of the saint (made in 1703) will be carried.

The Festival of St. Michael is part of the religious and cultural heritage of the city
and was established in the colonial period, by the time the town was still called São Miguel da Barra do Rio de Contas. In the 1720 the chapel to St. Michael the Archangel was constructed, and in 1723, it was built the Church, which houses the original image brought by the Portuguese settlers. The name of the angel means "Who is like God?" and he is considered the leader of the heavenly army, the angel of repentance and justice.
